Profile & career
From college tennis to a US Open final.
Ben Shelton is the best American player of his generation and one of the most spectacular members of the top 10. "It's hard to put him in a box or set limits for him," says Patrick Mouratoglou. He burst onto the pro scene in 2022, straight from the American college circuit, and reached the US Open semi-finals in 2023, at 20. His left-handed serve is his trademark.
He broke into the top 10 in 2025, the year of his Australian Open semi-final and his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto, which made him, at 22, the youngest American to win at that level since Andy Roddick in 2004. He reached world No. 5 on 10 November 2025.
The 2026 season is the most prolific of his career: four titles in four finals, in Dallas, Munich, Stuttgart and Montreal. In Munich he became the first American since Andre Agassi in Rome in 2002 to win a clay-court title at ATP 500 level or above, and by defending his Canadian crown in Montreal he joined Murray, Djokovic and Nadal as the only men this century to win that title in consecutive years. At the US Open he then reached his first Grand Slam final and climbed to world No. 4 in the live rankings, his career best.

Titles, year by year.
Ben Shelton turned professional after the 2022 Cincinnati Masters 1000, where he reached the third round. In 2023 he reached the Australian Open quarter-finals and then the US Open semi-finals, where only Novak Djokovic stopped him, and won his first title in Tokyo. In April 2024 he became the youngest American No. 1 since Andy Roddick in March 2004. His seven titles include two Masters 1000s in Canada, Toronto in 2025 and Montreal in 2026, where he defended his crown without dropping a set, three ATP 500s (Tokyo 2023, Dallas and Munich 2026) and two ATP 250s (Houston 2024 and Stuttgart 2026, his first on grass), making him one of the few players of his generation to have won on all three surfaces. At the 2026 US Open he beat Tallon Griekspoor, Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-2, 6-3, 6-4, without facing a break point), then second seed Carlos Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) in 4 hours 28 minutes: his first win over a top-3 player after seventeen defeats, in the latest-finishing match in the tournament's history, at 3.33 am. He beat Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals with twenty aces, becoming the youngest American finalist in New York since Andy Roddick in 2003 and the youngest player from outside Europe to reach a Grand Slam final since Juan Martín del Potro in 2009, before facing Alexander Zverev in the final.

MOURATOGLOU ACADEMY

Ben Shelton prepared part of his 2024 clay-court season on the Mouratoglou Academy courts in Biot, including several weeks of training with Holger Rune, and he forged a real bond with Patrick Mouratoglou as soon as he arrived on tour. That same year, nicknamed The Mountain, he won UTS Frankfurt, beating Ugo Humbert in the final, a year after a semi-final in Los Angeles. "UTS allows him to take even more risks, and he has such a good feel for the serve that these rules suit him," said Patrick Mouratoglou.
In March 2026, asked which players could join Alcaraz and Sinner at the top, Patrick named Shelton: "He has a great coach, his father, with a lot of experience both as a player and as a coach. He has a huge game, he's very ambitious and he trusts his abilities." During the 2026 US Open, he saw the fourth-round win over Stefanos Tsitsipas as the turning point: "This match was very, very important and decisive in terms of switching Ben from being a great player to being a top, top player."

GAME & EQUIPMENT
How Ben plays.
His game
Ben Shelton's number one asset is his serve, regularly above 230 km/h, with a very awkward left-handed spin. He combines that power with the ability to hit every part of the court, and he is an aggressive player: "I like going to the net, being able to use my touch and my athletic ability." Patrick Mouratoglou explains: "He's left-handed, so his slice moves the other way compared to what players are used to. His movement is very compact. He hits the ball before it starts to come down. He jumps high and lands about 30 centimetres inside the baseline, which is ideal."
His equipment
Ben Shelton plays with Yonex rackets and wears the Swiss brand On, co-founded by Roger Federer.
