Profile & career

The prototype of the modern player.

Daniil Medvedev is one of the best and most consistent players of the 2020s, winner of the 2021 US Open and the 2020 ATP Finals. With his coach Gilles Cervara and his technical staff, he has trained at the Mouratoglou Academy between tournaments since autumn 2020.

Tall but very mobile for his size, he has an unusual technique, yet it has not stopped him from having one of the best returns and one of the best backhands in the world.

He started playing tennis at the age of nine, developed in Russia and moved to France in 2014. He burst into the spotlight in the summer of 2019 with a run through the North American hard-court season that ended in a five-set US Open final lost to Rafael Nadal. He became world No. 1 in 2022 and has remained a fixture near the top of the rankings, beating Carlos Alcaraz at the 2023 US Open and Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon in 2024.

Did you know?He returns serve from one of the deepest positions in the history of tennis, his feet often almost touching the back canvas.

CAREER

Major titles, year by year.

Medvedev broke into the top 50 for the first time in 2017 after a promising grass-court season that included a semi-final in Eastbourne. In 2019 he reached four consecutive finals in North America, winning the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and losing the US Open final to Nadal in five sets, then ended the season with another Masters 1000 title in Shanghai, beating Alexander Zverev in the final. He won the ATP Finals in 2020, then the 2021 US Open, denying Novak Djokovic a calendar Grand Slam in the final (6-4, 6-4, 6-4). He became world No. 1 a few months later, after reaching the semi-finals in Acapulco, and finished every season from 2019 to 2024 in the top 10. Twice he came within a few games of winning the Australian Open, in 2022 against Nadal and in 2024 against Sinner, and his Rome Masters 1000 title in 2023 put an end to his reputation as a player allergic to clay. By the end of 2024 he had won 20 titles and lost 18 other finals, five of them at Grand Slams.

GAME & EQUIPMENT

How Daniil plays.

His game

Daniil Medvedev is the perfect counter-puncher. Rather than imposing himself through power or outright winners, he relies on consistency, tactical intelligence and natural competitive instinct to draw errors from his opponents. He can take control of a point within two or three shots after a return often struck several metres behind the baseline. His backhand is one of the best in the world, and even his volley, his relative weakness, is at a solid tour level and not a vulnerable part of his game.
