Profile & career

The Bulgarian with the graceful one-handed backhand.

Coached by Patrick Mouratoglou in 2012, before Patrick began working with Serena Williams, Grigor Dimitrov is one of the most consistent and popular players on the men's tour, loved for his spectacular tennis and his warmth with fans. His record may not fully match his raw talent, but he has reached the semi-finals at three of the four Grand Slams, climbed to world No. 3 and won the ATP Finals in 2017.

World junior No. 1 in 2007 and junior champion at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2008, he confirmed his early promise on the professional tour. The best Bulgarian player in history, and the first from his country to win a Tour title in the Open Era, he has won nine ATP titles.

He is still capable of an exceptional level: at the 2024 Miami tournament he beat Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 6-4 in one of the best matches of his life, before losing the final to Jannik Sinner.

Did you know? For much of 2024 he was the only player in the top 10 with a one-handed backhand.

CAREER

Titles, year by year.

Grigor Dimitrov turned professional in 2008, playing Futures and Challengers and benefiting from several wildcards into ATP events. Quickly dubbed the "Bulgarian Federer", he played his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2009 thanks to a wildcard earned by his junior title, and won four Challenger titles between 2010 and 2011 (Geneva, Bangkok twice and Cherbourg). His first ATP title came in Stockholm in 2013, beating David Ferrer in the final, and in 2014 he won on hard courts, clay and grass (Acapulco, Bucharest and Queen's). His finest season was 2017: after titles in Brisbane and Sofia and a first Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, he won all five of his matches at the ATP Finals in London on his debut, the first man to do so since John McEnroe in 1978, beating David Goffin in the final. He also beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Masters 1000, passed 400 career wins in 2023 and won Brisbane again in 2024. In Grand Slams, he lost semi-finals to Rafael Nadal in Melbourne after an epic five-setter, to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and to Daniil Medvedev in New York.

Grigor Dimitrov joined the Mouratoglou Academy in 2009, when he was ranked 487th in the world. Patrick Mouratoglou officially coached him from March to November 2012, and by the time he left the academy he had broken into the top 50, at No. 48.

"The whole Academy and I have loved these years working with Grigor Dimitrov," said Patrick Mouratoglou at the time. "He has a great personality and is an incredible player. I am sure that his potential and his dedication to his sport will take him very far."

Dimitrov has kept close links with the academy, where he regularly returns for training blocks on hard and clay courts. He also played UTS, the competition launched by Patrick Mouratoglou, in 2020, 2021 and 2023. Nicknamed "G-Unit", he reached the final in Frankfurt in 2023 after replacing Daniil Medvedev at short notice, losing to Andrey Rublev.
