Profile & career

From Roland-Garros junior champion to world No. 2.

A former world No. 2 and a hugely popular figure thanks to her generous personality, Spain's Paula Badosa is one of the big personalities of women's tennis.

On the professional tour she won the WTA 1000 at Indian Wells in 2021 and climbed to second in the world in April 2022. But a string of physical problems, anxiety and depression then halted her momentum. “It was very hard for me. I wasn't moving up the rankings and I was losing a lot,” she explained. In 2024 she managed to play a full season, and a title in Washington helped her finish the year ranked 12th in the world.

Born in New York to Spanish parents, Paula Badosa started playing tennis at the age of seven, after her family moved back to Barcelona. As a junior she rose to eighth in the world and won several tournaments, including Roland-Garros in 2015.

CAREER

Titles, year by year.

After a difficult start to her career, Paula Badosa burst onto the scene by winning Indian Wells in 2021, beating former champion Victoria Azarenka in a final lasting more than three hours, a few weeks after a quarter-final in Cincinnati where she beat Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. The following year she reached world No. 2 after an excellent clay-court swing that included a semi-final in Stuttgart. Injuries made 2023 a nightmare season and she dropped out of the top 50, before bouncing back in 2024 to finish 12th in the WTA rankings. In 2021, the year she broke through at the highest level, she also reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland-Garros; after several difficult years, mentally and physically, she returned to that stage at the 2024 US Open.
