CAREER

Titles, year by year.

Naomi Osaka made an immediate impact on the WTA Tour: in her first professional match, at Stanford in 2014, aged 16, she beat world No. 19 Samantha Stosur. Two years later she broke into the top 100, then the top 50. By winning the 2018 US Open, beating Serena Williams in the final, she became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam tournament, and the following year she became the first Asian player to reach world No. 1. She has won seven of her 11 WTA finals; the last, in Miami in 2022, was lost to Iga Świątek. A regular in the top 10 from 2018 to 2022, she then slipped down the rankings because of poor results, mental health issues, a subject she helped bring into the open alongside athletes such as Simone Biles, and an Achilles tendon injury. She missed the whole 2023 season during her first pregnancy and returned to competition in January 2024. She has yet to find her best form on clay and grass.

Naomi Osaka began working with Patrick Mouratoglou in September 2024, with their first sessions together in Los Angeles, after parting ways with her previous coach Wim Fissette. “He's a very good coach. I'm very happy that he accepted this project,” she said at the WTA 1000 in Beijing, where an injury in the last 16 against Coco Gauff ended her 2024 season.

“I'm very excited because I think she's playing incredibly well,” Patrick Mouratoglou said at UTS Frankfurt. “I sense a real motivation in her to get back to the top. It's my challenge to bring her back to her best level and do even better if possible.”
