Profile & career

One of the best Belgian players of her generation.

Yanina Wickmayer began her professional career in 2004 and achieved her best Grand Slam result in 2009, reaching the semi-finals of the US Open at just 19.

Patrick Mouratoglou coached her from 2010 to 2012 and took her to her highest ranking, world No. 12 in 2010. He described her as "an intelligent, determined girl, an incredible athlete". She was also coached by Nicolas Beuque, a coach at the Mouratoglou Academy, and remained a solid top-100 player until 2017.

After giving birth to a daughter in 2021, she returned to the tour in 2022. Troubled by back problems, she announced a career break in May 2024, with plans to return in 2025 using a protected ranking.

Did you know?In 2009 she was named the WTA's most improved player after rising from 71st to 16th in the world.

CAREER

Titles, year by year.

Yanina Wickmayer played 11 finals on the WTA Tour and won five of them: Estoril in 2009, her only title on clay, Linz the same year, Auckland in 2010, Tokyo in 2015 and Washington in 2016. She represented Belgium at two Olympic Games, London 2012 and Rio 2016. She has 22 wins against top-20 players, five of them against the top 10, the biggest coming at the 2011 Dubai tournament against world No. 7 Li Na. The high point of her career remains the 2009 US Open semi-final against Caroline Wozniacki, then world No. 8, a match she does not remember fondly: after hours of rain delays, it only started at 10pm, and not on Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters played the other semi-final.
