Profile & career

One of the fastest hitters on the tour.

Left-hander Ugo Humbert became the best French player in 2023, thanks above all to his prodigious ball speed and a sharpness that make him one of the players the world's best fear most. His results, titles and wins over top-10 players took him into the ATP top 20 the following year. His record includes two ATP 500 titles.

Commentating on a match of Ugo “The Commander” Humbert at UTS Frankfurt in October 2024, Patrick Mouratoglou described his compatriot as “a very serious player, ready to do whatever it takes to reach his full potential, passionate about tennis and fully devoted to his sport”. He added: “He has a very good mentality. I like him a lot, he's one of the nicest guys on the tour. When he's confident and takes the ball early, it's incredible how fast he plays.”

Spotted by the French Tennis Federation (FFT) as a youngster and trained at INSEP, Ugo Humbert turned professional in the mid-2010s, reached the top 100 in 2018 and has kept improving his game ever since.

Did you know?He is the only player in the world's top 10 for the fastest ball speed on both the forehand and the backhand.

CAREER

Titles, year by year.

After making his tour debut in qualifying at his home tournament in Metz, Humbert entered the top 100 in 2018 and won his first Grand Slam match at the US Open. His career moved up a gear in 2019 with a run to the last 16 at Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, before his first title in Auckland at the start of 2020. In April 2024 he broke into the top 15 for the first time, reaching 13th, and later that year he played his first Masters 1000 final, in Paris, against Alexander Zverev. He has lost only two ATP finals, his two most recent: to Arthur Fils in Tokyo and to Zverev at Paris-Bercy. He joined the UTS circuit in 2024 after being an alternate at the 2023 Grand Final in London, and came close to a first trophy in Frankfurt in 2024, losing the final to Ben Shelton.

GAME & EQUIPMENT

How Ugo plays.

His game

Ugo Humbert is a true left-hander who has steadily improved his serve and now wins more free points on his first delivery. He is usually commanding on his service games, serving aggressively to finish rallies quickly. Solid and improving on the return, he is an attacking player overall who likes to smother opponents by taking the initiative, and his left-handed touch lets him hit winners from anywhere on the court.
