Profile & career
The greatest player in the history of tennis.
Serena Williams is the greatest player in tennis history, both for her record and for her status as a global star whose influence reaches far beyond the sport. She won 10 of her 23 Grand Slam titles with Patrick Mouratoglou as her coach, from Wimbledon 2012 to the Australian Open 2017.
Their partnership is one of the great success stories of modern tennis. Serena had already won 13 majors by the age of 30, yet Patrick convinced her that she was still under-achieving compared with her potential, and together they opened a major new chapter in both their careers.
A precocious phenomenon and the younger sister of another, Venus Williams, she played her first WTA match at 16, in 1997, and finished that season in the top 100 (99th). She broke into the top 20 in 1998 and won her first title the following year at the Open Gaz de France.
Did you know? She is the highest-earning female athlete in the history of sport.

GAME & EQUIPMENT
How Serena plays.
Her game
Serena Williams remained a hugely powerful player off both wings right to the end of her career, hitting mostly flat. She also relied on a serve unlike anything women's tennis had seen before or has seen since. She won three Grand Slam titles after saving match points, proof of a mindset worthy of a legend. Her only relative weakness was her net play.
Her equipment
Serena Williams played with a Wilson Blade, strung with natural gut and Luxilon 4G.
