Profile & career
Stan the Man, a champion for the big occasions.
Stan Wawrinka is one of the most popular players in tennis, for his one-handed backhand, considered the best in the world in the 2010s, and for his three Grand Slam titles, won at the peak of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's careers. He broke through at 29 by winning the 2014 Australian Open. His Swedish coach Magnus Norman convinced him he could beat anyone, and Patrick Mouratoglou often cites Norman as one of the coaches capable of changing a player's life.
Patrick Mouratoglou ranks Wawrinka's one-handed backhand as the best of all time, ahead of Roger Federer, Richard Gasquet, Gastón Gaudio and Gustavo Kuerten. He also calls him "an enormous fighter": "In Grand Slams, Stan often manages to get into the zone and play some absolutely fabulous tennis. He likes to point to his temple with his index finger, it's his trademark, as if to say 'look how strong my head is'."
Wawrinka was also decisive in winning the only Davis Cup in the history of Swiss tennis, in 2014, alongside Roger Federer.

Biggest titles, year by year.
Never the most gifted player of his generation, and long in the shadow of Roger Federer, four years his senior, Stan Wawrinka made up for it with hard work: at 16 he was Switzerland's No. 1 under-18 player, and in 2003 he won the Roland-Garros junior title. He joined the professional tour in 2002, reached the top 50 in 2005 and the top 10 in 2008, but it was the arrival of Magnus Norman in his team that turned him into "Stan the Man". He won 16 titles, including the Australian Open in 2014, beating Rafael Nadal in the final, and the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 the same year. At Roland-Garros in 2015 and the US Open in 2016 he beat Novak Djokovic in four-set finals during the Serbian's best years, playing near-perfect tennis in the 2015 final in Paris. He also lost fifteen finals, including one at Roland-Garros.
