Profile & career

A diamond in the rough.

Spotted as a teenager by Patrick Mouratoglou, Marcos Baghdatis made his name early, first as a junior: in 2003 he won the Australian Open and the Orange Bowl and became world No. 1.

In 2006, aged just 20, he reached the Australian Open final after beating Andy Roddick, Ivan Ljubičić and David Nalbandian, and took the first set off Roger Federer before losing, with Patrick Mouratoglou and his team in the stands. He rose to world No. 8 and won four ATP titles. He is also remembered as the last player Andre Agassi beat, at the 2006 US Open, before the American retired.

CAREER

Titles, year by year.

After his first professional season in 2004, Marcos Baghdatis climbed the rankings quickly, entering the top 100 in January 2005. His run to the 2006 Australian Open final took him to world No. 8, the highest ranking of his career. Between injuries and doubts he then struggled to fulfil his potential, remaining a regular in the top 20 until 2008 before gradually slipping down the rankings. He retired with four titles, in Beijing (2006), Zagreb (2007), Stockholm (2009) and Sydney (2010), from 14 finals; besides Melbourne, his biggest lost finals came at the ATP 500 events in Washington (2010) and Dubai (2017). He beat 22 top-10 players, including the world No. 1 twice, both in 2010: Roger Federer at Indian Wells and Rafael Nadal in Cincinnati. He played the last match of his career at Wimbledon in 2019, losing to Matteo Berrettini in the second round.

MOURATOGLOU ACADEMY

His link with the Mouratoglou Academy.

Patrick Mouratoglou spotted Marcos Baghdatis at just 13, at the Petits As in Tarbes. “He was different, I could tell straight away,” he recalls. “He was the only one I could see, with his charisma and the way he signed his name. After a week's trial, his father entrusted him to me.” The Cypriot stayed at the academy from 1998 to 2008, personally supervised by Patrick.

Their split was a difficult one, as the two men no longer agreed on the objectives or how to reach them. Patrick often says the experience taught him never to make decisions on the spur of the moment, the worst thing a coach can do, and never to over-invest in the emotional relationship with a player.

GAME & EQUIPMENT

How Marcos plays.

His game

Marcos Baghdatis's two great strengths were his backhand and his return of serve, which gave him an extraordinary ability to break. Very solid in baseline rallies and able to play at a very high tempo, he was typical of players who win by drawing unforced errors. Despite his size, he was a good server, taking big risks on his first serve.
