Profile & career

From the USTA courts to the US Open semi-finals.

Frances Tiafoe is one of the most popular players in world tennis, thanks to his spectacular game, outgoing personality and remarkable life story. The son of Sierra Leonean immigrants, he was born in Maryland and started playing thanks to his father, who worked as a maintenance technician for the United States Tennis Association.

His talent showed early: in 2013 he became the youngest player ever to win the Orange Bowl, and a few months later he was world No. 2 in the junior rankings. Constantly improving since turning professional at 17, he won his first ATP title in Delray Beach in 2018. His victory over Rafael Nadal in the last 16 of the 2022 US Open took his popularity to another level, and he has stayed in the world's top 20 ever since.

Beyond tennis, he wants to inspire future generations. "I want to win Grand Slams, but I also want to have an impact on people and be remembered," he told Chris Eubanks and Ben Shelton on the UTS programme All on the Table.

CAREER

Titles, year by year.

Frances Tiafoe broke into the top 100 at 18 and the top 50 at 20, in 2018, the year of his first title in Delray Beach against Peter Gojowczyk and a third round at Wimbledon. His results then became inconsistent despite some flashes of brilliance, such as his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the 2019 Australian Open. He fulfilled his potential at the 2022 US Open, beating Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev to become the first American man to reach the semi-finals since Andy Roddick in 2006, and finished the season in the top 20, a place he has not given up since. He added titles in Houston and Stuttgart in 2023, reached a second US Open semi-final in 2024, his best Grand Slam result along with 2022, and played the Cincinnati Masters 1000 final the same year.

GAME & EQUIPMENT

How Frances plays.

His game

With his fiery temperament, Frances Tiafoe is a showman who feeds off the crowd, backed by superb physical qualities. "Frances Tiafoe has always been a great athlete, but now he's also become more aggressive, especially on his backhand," says Patrick Mouratoglou. "When he stays on the baseline, he's super dangerous." The backhand remains his best shot, with virtually no weaknesses, but his forehand has improved too: where fast balls to that side used to produce unforced errors because his contact point moved around, he is now able to adapt.
