Profile & career

One of the most feared players on the tour.

The media have placed Holger Rune in a new Big Three of young stars alongside Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. He does not yet have their consistency, but he has been one of the most feared players on the circuit since winning the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters with Patrick Mouratoglou as his coach, beating five top-10 players in one week, a feat unique in ATP history.

Supported by Patrick Mouratoglou's ChampSeed foundation since the age of 13, he trains regularly on the academy's courts, whether or not Patrick is coaching him, which has not been the case since July 2024. Mouratoglou Academy staff have always been part of his team.

CAREER

Titles, year by year.

Holger Rune turned professional in 2020 and won his first Futures titles in Klosters, Valldoreix and Antalya. In June 2021 he won his first Challenger in Biella, and later that year he came through qualifying at the US Open and took a set off Novak Djokovic in the first round on Arthur Ashe Stadium. His first ATP title came in Munich in April 2022, where he knocked out world No. 3 Alexander Zverev before Botic van de Zandschulp withdrew from the final. At Roland-Garros that year he beat Denis Shapovalov and, in the last 16, world No. 4 and previous year's finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, before losing to Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals. In his first two months with Patrick Mouratoglou he won Stockholm, beating Tsitsipas in the final, reached the final in Basel and won the Rolex Paris Masters, beating Djokovic in the final, which made him a reserve at the ATP Finals. In 2023 he won Munich again, once more against Van de Zandschulp, reached the Masters 1000 finals in Monte Carlo and Rome, and climbed to world No. 4 in August. He has also lost finals in Sofia and Basel (2022), Monte Carlo and Rome (2023) and Brisbane (2024). On the UTS, “The Viking” became the youngest player in its history in 2020 in Nice, replacing Matteo Berrettini while ranked around 800th, and reached the final of the 2023 London Grand Final, lost to Jack Draper.

Holger Rune has been a member of the Mouratoglou Academy since the age of 13, thanks to the support of ChampSeed, and committed further to Patrick Mouratoglou in October 2022, with Patrick by his side for his Rolex Paris Masters title. Patrick coached him personally from October 2022 to March 2023 and from April to September 2023, when he rose to world No. 4 thanks in particular to his Masters 1000 finals in Monte Carlo and Rome.

They parted ways in September 2023, reunited in February 2024, then separated again that July. “He will always be a good friend, but right now the best configuration for me is different. Nothing changes in my relationship with the Mouratoglou Academy, which has always helped me a lot,” Rune said. He continues to train regularly at the academy, where he is still followed by physio Louis Fresneau.
